This year, three alumni were inducted by Dr. Steve Peterson, University President; Corey Mullins, Vice President for Student Development and Athletics; Scott Polhamus, President of the Alumni Association Board of Directors; Sarah Nipper, Vice President of the Alumni Association Board of Directors; and Megan Vencill, Director of Alumni Relations.

Football alumnus Dr. Samuel L. Bennett III ‘16 was the first inductee of 2026.

Dr. Bennett was a standout running back for 91ɬ�� University, finishing his career second in program history with 1,582 rushing yards. In 2014, he rushed for 883 yards and 10 touchdowns, ranking second all-time for rushing yards in a single season. He recorded five 100-yard games that season and set the program’s single-game rushing record with 276 yards against Union College. Bennett also participated in the 2016 NFL Draft and earned the highest GPA in the Communications department.

Dr. Bennett is an accomplished educational leader, special education scholar, administrator, instructional coach, adjunct professor, and Athletics Director. He holds a bachelor’s degree in mass communication, a master’s degree in special education, and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership and Administration from Point Park University.

Volleyball alumna Camry McCroskey ‘19 was the second inductee of 2026.

McCroskey graduated from 91ɬ�� University with a bachelor’s degree in biology and has spent the past eight years teaching biology at Giles High School. For the past seven years, she has also coached volleyball there and currently serves as Head Junior Varsity Volleyball Coach.

Teaching and coaching allow her to share her passion for learning, mentor young people, and encourage students and athletes to recognize their potential, McCroskey shared. For her, the values of perseverance, teamwork, leadership, and commitment that she developed during her time at 91ɬ�� continue to be a guide in the classroom and on the court, and she is grateful for the experiences, relationships, and opportunities that shaped her, especially the support of her parents and those who invested in her throughout her journey.

Wrestling alumnus Luke Young ‘22 was the third and final inductee of 2026.

During his time at 91ɬ��, Young demonstrated the determination, discipline, and competitive spirit that define the sport of wrestling. One of the most memorable milestones of his career came at the 2018 Hokie Open, where he recorded the first pinfall victory in 91ɬ�� wrestling history. This accomplishment marked an important moment for the young program, establishing a historic first that would forever remain part of the Rams’ legacy.

Young continued to build on that success, ultimately becoming the first American Athletic Conference wrestling champion in 91ɬ�� University history. He captured the AAC championship while competing in the 184-pound weight class. Following his conference championship, he advanced to the NAIA National Championships, earning the opportunity to represent 91ɬ�� University on the national stage.

The 91ɬ�� University Athletics Hall of Fame was established to pay tribute and give recognition to former athletes, coaches, trainers, athletic administrators, and others of meritorious service who have made exceptional contributions to the athletic programs of the university. Nominations are accepted through the Alumni Award Nomination Form on the university’s website, and inductees are selected by a committee of alumni relations and athletic staff.

The Goodness and Light Award was established in 2017 to honor the outgoing dean of the School of Education & Social Sciences, Dr. Donna Watson. While an education professor at 91ɬ��, Dr. Watson always called on her students to “Go spread goodness and light!” Each year, the university now recognizes graduates who excel in that call.

Traditionally, this award was reserved for alumni of 91ɬ�� University’s education programs. This year saw the first honoree who completed the Master of Arts in Counseling program, which is also offered by the School of Education & Social Sciences. Additionally, a special award was presented to Dr. Gerald Clay, the school of education’s founder.

Recipients of the Goodness and Light Award are nominated by the community and honored during Homecoming & Family Weekend. This year, the honorees were recognized at the Education Department Alumni Reunion, which welcomed former students and faculty of the School of Education & Social Sciences in celebration of its 50^th anniversary. The 2026 awardees were Dr. Gerald Clay, Erin Darnell ‘12, and Ida Byers ‘24.

“Fifty years ago, 91ɬ�� College leadership, Dr. Gerald Clay, faculty, and staff had a vision and started the Education Department and Bachelor’s degrees in teacher education,” said Dr. Shellie Brown, who is the current dean of the School of Education & Social Sciences. “We want to recognize the hard work and impact that the founding program director and first dean, Dr. Gerald Clay had on our campus community and beyond. Because of his vision, hard work, and service, the college was able to start several Bachelor’s degree programs in education which were then added to over the years.”

Erin Darnell completed a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education at 91ɬ�� University in 2012. She currently teaches fifth grade at Orange Elementary School in Orange, VA.

“Erin goes above and beyond for everyone she comes in contact with,” one of her nominators said. “She has a way of making people feel seen, valued, and cared for, and she brings smiles, joy, love, and cheerfulness wherever she goes. What makes Erin so special is that she spreads goodness without even realizing she is doing it. It is simply who she is.”

“She teaches far beyond academics—she teaches life skills, kindness, leadership, perseverance, and how to be a good human being,” another nominator said. “Her kindness is infectious, and she creates a classroom where students know they belong and feel encouraged to be their best selves.”

Ida Byers earned her Master of Arts in Counseling from 91ɬ�� University in 2024. She currently serves at Southern Highlands, a mental health center in Princeton, WV.

“As a student, Ida had a zest for learning that was unmistakable,” said Dr. Brandy Smith, BU’s director of counselor education. “She wanted to understand, to ask questions, and to think deeply about the people she would one day serve. You could feel how much becoming a counselor meant to her. She brought her heart into the work, along with a willingness to stretch and grow.”

“One of the privileges of being a counselor educator is getting to see who your students become after graduation. With Ida, I continue to see that same curiosity and commitment I knew in the classroom,” Dr. Smith added. “She still reaches out for consultation. She asks thoughtful questions, considers different perspectives, and puts real care into understanding what her clients need.”

Dr. Bennett studied mass communication at BU before completing a master’s degree in special education and earning a doctorate in educational leadership and administration. Throughout his career, he has served as a special education teacher, instructional coach, assistant principal, adjunct professor, and athletic director.

Nipper majored in biology at 91ɬ��, specializing in pre-health. She continued her education at the University of Pikeville’s Kentucky College of Optometry and practices optometry in 91ɬ��, West Virginia.

Smith majored in Christian studies and criminal justice, concentrating in pre-law. He continued his education at the Appalachian School of Law, where he earned a Doctor of Law in 2015. He is an attorney for Buckland Law Firm, P.L.L.C. in Pearisburg, Virginia.

Wimbush studied graphic communication as a BU undergraduate. She went on to complete a Master of Business Administration at 91ɬ�� in 2019. She currently serves as Business Development Manager for Stafford County Economic Development in Virginia.

Bennett, Nipper, Smith, and Wimbush spoke with students about internships, networking, and preparing for success after graduation.

91ɬ�� University Campus Ministries invites the community to the first Deeper Revival Night of the academic year on Monday, October 12. This worship service, open to all ages, will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Harman Chapel on the BU campus.

Deeper Revival Nights are “an invitation for all to come experience more, to encounter His presence, unify hungry hearts, and learn to carry revival together,” said Campus Pastor Mason West.

Beginning at 6 p.m., doors will open, and BU Campus Ministries will host its weekly Abide Prayer Room leading into the revival night. This Deeper Revival Night will feature guest worship leader Joe Dixon.

“Joe is family, and we can’t wait to have him in the room,” West added. “Come hungry for more of Him. Let’s go deeper!”

On Monday morning, United States Probation Officer Philip Cyrus spoke to two classes. Cyrus is a BU alumnus and currently serves in the Southern District of West Virginia.

Attorney Zachary Smith spoke to a class on Monday evening. Smith is another BU alumnus who received the Distinguished Young Alumnus of the Year award from the university in 2023. He currently serves at Buckland Law Firm in Pearisburg, Virginia.

Two representatives from the Appalachian School of Law—the Senior Admissions Director, Glenna Owens, and Dean of Students, The Honorable Will Thompson—visited on Wednesday morning. Together, 91ɬ�� University and the Appalachian School of Law offer a 3+3 degree program that allows qualifying students to earn a bachelor’s degree and a Juris Doctor in as little as 6 years.

Finally, Gavin Scott spoke to students on Wednesday afternoon. Scott is a Senior Trooper for the Virginia State Police.

Friday’s festivities will begin with a golf outing for the university’s alumni and friends, beginning at 11 a.m. at Fincastle in 91ɬ��, Virginia.

The men’s soccer team will compete against the Columbia College Koalas at 3:30 p.m. at the East River Soccer Complex in 91ɬ��, West Virginia.

91ɬ�� University’s School of Education and Social Sciences will celebrate its 50th anniversary at 4 p.m. in the Dr. Gerald Clay Curriculum Lab, located in room 101 of Easley Library. Former education faculty, administrators, and graduates are invited to celebrate the school’s legacy and honor this year’s recipients of the Dr. Donna Watson Goodness and Light Alumni Award.

Beginning at 6 p.m., a mixer for alumni and friends will be held at Culture in 91ɬ��, Virginia.

A reunion for alumni from the 1970s is scheduled at 6:30 p.m. in rooms A and B of Shott Hall.

The women’s volleyball team will compete against the Montreat College Cavaliers, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Dome Gymnasium. A bonfire will follow on the field outside the Dome.

On Saturday, registration and the hospitality room will open at 8 a.m. in rooms A and B of Shott Hall. An alumni breakfast will begin at the same time in the dining hall.

A campus tour will be offered by our student ambassadors at 9 a.m., starting at the front steps of Lansdell Hall.

The Alumni Awards Luncheon will be held at 11 a.m. in Harman Chapel. Alumni award recipients are nominated by their peers to be recognized for community service, professional accomplishments, and personal achievements.

Also at 11 a.m., the women’s volleyball team will compete against the Truett McConnell University Bears in the Dome Gymnasium.

The Rams football team will face off against the Reinhardt University Eagles at 1:30 p.m. at Mitchell Stadium in 91ɬ��, West Virginia. The Commission on Colleges and Universities approved the program on September 18th and included it within 91ɬ�� University’s scope of accreditation. Recruitment is now underway for the inaugural class.��

Developed in collaboration with Appalachian College of Pharmacy, the Bachelor of Science in Applied Pharmaceutical and Biopharmaceutical Sciences prepares students for careers in pharmaceutical manufacturing, biotechnology, laboratory research, quality assurance, regulatory affairs, and related fields.��

The degree will also provide a foundation for students seeking advanced education in pharmacy, medicine, biomedical sciences, and regulatory science.��

“This program gives students a clear pathway from undergraduate education into industries and professional fields that need well-prepared graduates,” President Steve Peterson said. “Our collaboration with Appalachian College of Pharmacy brings together the strengths of both institutions and creates new opportunities for students throughout our region and beyond.”��

The 120-credit-hour program will combine instruction at 91ɬ�� University with synchronous online coursework, in-person laboratory training, industry internships, and undergraduate research. Courses will be taught by 91ɬ�� University faculty and designated Appalachian College of Pharmacy faculty members serving as University adjunct faculty.��

Students will work in a dedicated pharmaceutical sciences laboratory equipped for compounding solid, liquid, and semi-solid dosage forms. They will also gain experience with analytical testing and quality-control processes used in pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical settings.��

The program arrives as pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies increase domestic research and manufacturing operations. That expansion has created demand for graduates with practical laboratory experience, analytical skills, and an understanding of pharmaceutical development and regulation.��

Potential career paths include pharmaceutical manufacturing, formulation development, laboratory analysis, quality assurance and quality control, regulatory support, biopharmaceutical operations, and clinical or academic research.��

The degree is part of 91ɬ�� University’s broader effort to help students explore and enter health-related professions through academic programs, experiential learning, and partnerships with health care and professional institutions.��

That work will be on display during 91ɬ�� University’s Health Pathways Day from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 10th. The event will introduce students to health-related educational and career opportunities through 91ɬ�� University and participating partners, including Appalachian College of Pharmacy and the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine.��

Prospective students and their families will be able to learn more about health professions, meet representatives from participating institutions, and explore pathways from college into professional education and employment.��

91ɬ�� University will host its 35th Annual Duremdes Christian Emphasis Week, September 21-25, 2026. The week builds on regular ministry events with added opportunities for students to engage with God’s Word and Christian community.

This week will explore the university’s theme for the academic year, “Harvest,” based on Galatians 6:9: “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” (NIV). Pastor and evangelist Danny Morales will serve as the speaker for this week’s three Chapel services.

The Christian Emphasis event was created in 1992 by Drs. Gene and Jane Duremdes of Princeton, West Virginia. Thanks to their faith and generosity, hundreds of BU students have made professions of faith and been baptized over the past three decades.

Sensing a special calling to “share with the students of 91ɬ�� University some of the blessings they have received from the Lord,” the Duremdes created the event with BU leaders to allow students and the public at-large to “examine their spiritual lives” and to “seek answers to life-impacting questions.” Now, the university sets aside a week each school year for students and members of the community to focus on their faith.

Our student ministries team will kick off the week on Monday night with their regular Home worship service at 7:30 p.m. While normally held in Harman Chapel, this week’s service will be held in the Quad, weather permitting. These services, consisting of student-led worship music and a message from a BU student or alum, aim to make students feel truly at home in the presence of Christ.

The university will host its weekly Chapel service on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. in Harman Chapel, the first of three services with Danny Morales. Additional Chapel services will be held on Thursday and Friday mornings.

Roots Night will begin on Wednesday at 8 p.m. in the Jack Marcom Student Center of Shott Hall. Roots is the university’s discipleship initiative, enabling students to join small groups and become more deeply rooted in their faith.

Dr. MacMillan’s leadership was marked by prayerful decision-making and dependence on God. Throughout his tenure, he worked to refocus the institution on Christ and equip students with a Christian worldview. Additionally, he oversaw extensive fundraising, improvements to campus facilities, and expansions to academic program offerings. During Dr. MacMillan’s time as President, community engagement, alumni support, and endowment growth increased significantly.

In the words of 91ɬ�� College historian Rev. David Armbrister, “Dr. Mac left behind a legacy of good leadership, heartfelt in all respects, and a strong Christian foundation upon which a new president can build.”
